Grammy winning sensation H.E.R. releases a new single titled “I Can’t Breathe”.
The song is about Mr. George Floyd who was killed at the hands (and knees) of Police Officers, who failed to protect him and ended up taking his life. After dozens of cries for help while already detained that he could not breathe, there was no let up, even after his body became lifeless.
We’re seeing these protests and movements across the world, and this isn’t just about the tragic circumstances of the loss of life from one person, its about way more then that – this isn’t the first time, while in police custody, a black man has died after repeatedly screaming out that “I Can’t Breathe” and ends up passing away.
The lyrics in H.E.R.’s record are very telling and emotional. “I can’t breathe / you’re taking my life from me / I can’t breathe / will anyone fight for me”. There is also a spoken word at the end of the song that continues reinforcing the anger and frustration that this is no longer going to be tolerated. “We breed the same / and we bleed the same / but still we don’t see the same / be thankful that we are God fearing / because we do not seek revenge / we seek justice”. Something you really need to listen to all the way through.
